Renting Out Your Cabin or Cottage? Make Sure You Register!

Sullivan County has always been a wonderful place to vacation.  Our area has become a great “social distancing” destination amid the COVID-19 pandemic.  There are several lodging opportunities available and many people are posting or advertising rentals such as a cottage, lodge, farm, cabin, house, barn, private room, etc. for rent on Facebook, AirBNB and VRBO.  These are popular rental sites for prospective vacation destinations.

If you have ventured into the rental market, your rental unit must be registered with the Sullivan County Treasurer.  The Sullivan County Ordinance 2016-3 was enacted in November 2016 to be effective January 1, 2017.  This imposes a 3% tax on transient stays.  The funds collected are utilized to enhance county-wide tourist promotion in conjunction with the Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau.

The State of Pennsylvania enacted Act 108 of 2018 requiring on-line booking sites to collect and remit required room tax dollars to the local authority.  When renting outside of the on-line booking sites and taking reservations on your own, you are required to submit the documentation and payment for those rentals on a quarterly basis.

Please contact the Sullivan County Treasurers Office at 570-946-7331 with questions and to obtain relevant information and your application.
